Mulch Installation Services in Shoreline, Washington

Adding fresh mulch to your garden beds is one of the easiest ways to improve curb appeal while supporting a healthy landscape. Whether you're refreshing old mulch or updating overgrown beds, mulching is a smart investment in the long-term health and beauty of your yard.

There are several different types of mulch available at local landscape supply yards that we can use on your property for different aesthetic and functional properties.  Typically we use hardwood bark mulch in a variety of grades including bark nuggets, shredded mulch, and bark fines.  It's available in different colors as well including black, brown, or hemlock mulch.

Benefits of Bark Mulch for Washington Landscapes

Installing bark mulch in your garden beds isn’t just about appearance—it plays an important role in plant health and soil function, especially in Southwest Washington’s varied climate. Here are three key benefits:

1. Moisture Retention
Bark mulch helps retain soil moisture by reducing evaporation—especially important during Washington’s hot, dry summer spells. According to The Washington State University Extension, mulched beds experience more consistent soil moisture, helping reduce plant stress and the need for frequent watering. This is especially useful in areas without irrigation systems or during periods of water restrictions.

2. Weed Suppression
A 2–3 inch layer of mulch creates a physical barrier that limits sunlight to weed seeds, reducing germination. OSU Extension also notes that mulching is one of the most effective cultural methods for weed control in ornamental beds, reducing weed growth by up to 85–90% when applied correctly.

3. Soil Health Improvement
As bark mulch decomposes, it naturally adds organic matter to the soil. This improves soil structure, promotes microbial activity, and enhances nutrient availability—creating better long-term conditions for your plants to thrive.

Whether you're refreshing beds or starting a new landscape, professionally installed bark mulch provides both immediate and long-lasting value for your garden. Preparing Your Garden And Landscape Beds For Mulch Installation

Weed Removal: We begin by removing all of the weeds and invasive plants from the garden beds. We usually do this by hand, ensuring we get the roots to prevent regrowth.

Clear Debris: We remove any plant debris, out-of-place rocks, or old, torn, landscape fabric, that may hinder the new mulch's ability to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture.

Define Edges: Using a sharp spade or an edging tool we clearly redefine the edges of your garden beds. This improves appearance and also helps contain the mulch within the desired areas.

Install Landscape Fabric (Optional): For added weed control, laying down landscape fabric is an option.

Plan for Planting: If you're having us install new plants, we usually do so before spreading mulch. This allows us to place the plants exactly where you want them and ensures the mulch doesn't interfere with the planting process.

Mulch Application: Finally, we apply mulch evenly across your garden beds, maintaining a thickness of about 2-3 inches.  We avoid piling mulch against plant stems and tree trunks to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot.

Proper Bed Preparation for Mulch Installation

For mulch to look its best and perform well, the garden beds need to be properly prepared first. Simply spreading mulch over weeds, debris, or uneven surfaces won’t deliver the clean, polished result you’re after—and can actually lead to problems like trapped moisture or weed growth.

At Greenleaf Landscaping & Construction, we offer garden bed clean-up and prep services as part of your mulch installation estimate. This includes removing debris, edging beds, and smoothing the soil—so your mulch looks tidy, professional, and lasts longer. A little prep goes a long way in transforming your landscape.
